Can Adult Coloring Books Enhance Your Creativity?

Adult coloring books seem to be the rage these days. They're on TV shopping networks, commercials, and just last month, when I received my monthly catalog promotions in my junk mail, I was surprised to find them advertised among the offerings of household items and gifts. Needless to say, it got my attention. For about 20 bucks with shipping and handling, these coloring books came equipped with dozens of images and shapes, and an array of colors that would rival a rainbow. Everything needed to indulge one's artistic desires.

Shortly thereafter, when my mom mentioned getting one, I was concerned that she might be in some regressive state.
Despite all the buzz, I didn't buy it. Because I wasn't sold.
To me, it seemed a little silly in nature.
Turns out, I could be wrong.

Studies show that adult coloring books can be therapeutic, reduce stress, and encourage creativity.
Who knew?

But upon reflection, I guess it's possible.
There are many non-related writing activities that enhance my creative process, are simplistic in nature, and reduce stress. Like listening to music, watching movies and cooking.

One writer even shares: "Coloring offers relief and mindfulness without the paralysis that a blank page can cause."

Hype or help?
What do you think? Anyone out there a fan of adult coloring books?
If not, would you consider buying one in the near future?

  1. Hi Jennifer - it's something I couldn't get into ... I'd rather be doing something else - having a walk with all the colours of nature around me. I do know that they are very popular at the moment. The answers are No and No!!!!

Actually for an elderly I could imagine they'd help - give them something to do ... and help in other ways .. cheers Hilary

I agree. Could be good for the elderly. Much thanks for your thoughtful feedback.

  2. They aren't my cup of tea, but I can see where they would offer benefits for some. My 20 something daughter has a few and enjoys them. I'm with Hilary and you, I'd prefer a walk or a good book in my down time.

  4. I also prefer nature's colors. However, when my terminally ill friend was in her last days, she and I sat together and colored in coloring books, enjoying the simplicity of being together, sharing the finished product. But to do that zentangle coloring...I am too antsy, but I do think it awakens creativity.

  5. Heck, I color in my granddaughter's coloring books all the time. =0) Even elbow them out of the way on occasion. And they're cheaper at the $ store, too. Could be why I'm so famous. LOL

  8. For the graphic designs I created for our webshop products, I use the computer to put in colors.

I frequently also make use of a special file format that makes it possible for you as a customer to customize the original designs, and choose your own background color! For example for our T-shirts
you have lot's of Color (& Style) Options.

Currently (besides resent - I Love Writing - Happy Valentine Coffee Mugs) there actually are a few new freshly designed womans T-shirts that are already in 'the Pipeline' that will appear in shop soon.

    You hear it first ;)

  9. Jennifer, I found you through my amigo, Karen Lange. Love your blog. I think I might spend the afternoon just reading the posts. I've heard of those coloring books. I know someone that might benefit from them. As for me, a horseback ride or working on manuscripts are the medicine that I use. :-)

  10. I love relaxing with a coloring book. I recently went all in with a new book, new colored pencils, a new pencil sharpener. It's a rare type of relaxation that happens when I'm coloring, I'm focused in and utterly lost at the same time. It's perfect!
